Obstacles are the things we see . . .

. . . when we lose sight of our goals.

-Lee Burgland

Are You Thriving or Surviving?

Have you considered lately whether you are thriving, or merely surviving? To survive means to continue to exist. To thrive means to grow vigorously; to progress towards the realization of a goal.

Have you noticed how hard it is to produce optimum results when we’re in survival? Our self-esteem and energy level tend to be low, and it becomes challenging to focus on the task at hand as part of the bigger picture—our vision.

Survival is a place of scarcity and minimal existence. It is often filled with anxiety and worry. It is not related to what we have, but to our perspective of what we don’t have.

However, there is a much more powerful place to come from than survival. We call it "thrival" (the newest word in the Esteemed Human Development dictionary).

"Thrival" is grounded in joy and exuberance. When we live in a context of "thrival" there seems to be plenty of everything—health, money, relationships, etc. Life tends to flow in the direction we want, with relative ease.

So the question of the hour is, "How do I get from survival to ‘thrival?’" New results come from new thoughts and new actions. Albert Einstein said, "One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result."

Self accomplishment experts agree about the importance of creating a vision and setting the necessary goals to manifest that vision. However, when we’re in survival we lose sight of our dreams. It’s not enough to just create the vision—we need to check in from time to time and make sure that what we’re spending our time and energy on is getting us closer to that vision.

A positive attitude is also an essential component of thriving. Negative thinking throws us into survival immediately. Conversely, people who are thriving live in a world of possibility. They’re always exploring how things can happen as opposed to why they can’t.

One of my favorite sayings is, "Where your attention goes, the energy flows!" The easiest way to shift to a place of "thrival," is to notice where your attention is. If you focus on lack, that’s what you will produce. Focus on your blessings, and they will multiply. Successful people concentrate on the desired result, not all the obstacles in the way. They’re cognizant of the obstacles, but they don’t give their power over to them.

Lastly, people who are thriving know they are the only ones responsible for the results in their lives. They are not victimized by parents, bosses, the government, the weather, inflation, their job or their spouse. The only place they look when they want something to be different is in the mirror!

The bottom line is that it all comes down to choice. We can choose limiting beliefs that keep us in survival, or we can choose the high road—"thrival." It’s the place where dreams become reality.

Betsy A. Haas, MAGreetings from Betsy!

Welcome to this century’s final issue of E-Steemed Up! This is a time of year when we give thanks for family and friends, for all we have accomplished and for all life has given us. I know my own list of blessings is quite lengthy.

It is also a time of reflection.

Am I where I thought I would be at the turn of the century? Have I accomplished all that I hoped to? If not, what adjustments can be made?

This issue of E-Steemed Up! is focused on Creating Results. We create results when we remember:

  • to be flexible

  • to pick out the good qualities in others

  • to find the humor in all situations

  • to heal our hurt feelings

  • to list our blessings

  • that everyone makes mistakes and it’s OK

  • and that we are worth a mint!

Enjoy manifesting your dreams. You deserve to have everything your heart desires!

What Children Teach Us
About Creating Results

Child 1

Children teach us so many things. I’m talking about infants, toddlers and preschoolers—kids that have yet to learn fear, doubt and disapproval (Negative thinking comes in so many varieties!). Their days are filled with getting the results that really matter to them. Here are a few principles we would do well to learn from children about how to achieve desired results.

Focus. Kids never try to do more than one thing at a time. Whatever they’re up to, it gets their full and undivided attention.

Enjoy the Process. To a child, getting dirty is part of creating magnificent things. They love being actively, passionately involved and thus are able to create all the results they want with pure joy.

Children at PartyAbundance. Children are adamant that there is enough of everything for them to have what they want. There is no place in their consciousness for lack or scarcity.

Risking. Taking risks comes very naturally for the young. They actually think risking is FUN, until we teach them to be afraid of disappointment or failure. We are not born into this world with fear—it is learned. No one has ever become a success without taking risks.

Child on bikePerseverance. When children want something badly, they are relentless. Watch them learn to sit up, walk or ride a bike. They don’t give up when they stumble or fall. They just get up and go for it again and again until they have it mastered. This process reinforces the belief that they can do anything!

MadisenApproval Not Required. While young children love the approval of adults, if it’s not forthcoming, they remain undeterred. Their primary motivation is the pure joy of accomplishing something that’s important to them. They rarely let the opinions of others get in their way!

I recently returned from a most extraordinary experience, a journey beyond anything I ever imagined. I want to share this story of what happened when my dream to teach internationally was intertwined with the vision of a most remarkable woman from Uruguay.

While attending a professional conference in March of this year, I had the good fortune to re-connect with a friend and mentor, Dr. Jan Fish, who has been doing research in Uruguay. I had not seen this wonderful woman in 10 years. The next thing I knew, I had a new penpal, a Uruguayan by the name of Magela Guimaraes.

Although I had never met Magela face to face (all our communication was via e-mail), I began very quickly to get a sense of who she is and what she’s up to in this lifetime. Bursting with energy, and spilling over with possibility, Magela has a vision for her people. Dr. Fish had given her a copy of E-Steemed Up! , and she was eager to have the people of her country benefit from self-esteem trainings.

As our visions continued to evolve, Magela invited me to travel to Uruguay to do a series of trainings in a country where many of its citizens had forgotten how to dream. I had the honor of facilitating a three-day self-esteem workshop, doing a radio interview, and being the keynote speaker at a breakfast meeting. Magela titled that meeting "Dare to Dream and Be Whole," which spoke volumes to me about where she was coming from.

My time in Uruguay was unforgettable! I found the people incredibly warm and open, with a thirst for learning. When I first introduced the concept of "If you can dream it, you can have it," they looked at me like I had lost my mind. But as the week proceeded, we worked a lot on expanding "what’s possible."

The events were all fabulous. The breakfast meeting, attended by educators, business people, members of the U. S. Embassy, and more, was a huge success. As for the self-esteem workshops, I can’t say enough about the courage and commitment of the participants. Time and again they pressed up against the walls of their comfort zone, and just kept going. In the end, I think they were blown away by how much they really do make THE difference!

Magela and her family were soooo gracious to me. Magela, her husband Gustavo, children Martin, Sophia and Diego, and housekeeper/maid/cook/nanny Marta lovingly handled absolutely everything I wanted or needed.

While walking around Magela’s beautiful hometown of Montevideo, I was enthralled by the wide variety and magnificent beauty of the doors. As my stay progressed, they came to represent the wide variety of doors that were opening in Uruguay because of the phenomenal vision of one woman, Magela.

Shortly after my return I received the following e-mail from Magela, describing the week from her perspective.

"I cannot believe your visit is over. We e-mailed for three months and finally decided to make this to happen: Esteemed Human Development International coming to Uruguay. This is a simple sentence, but what really happened was that many people have been touched by your magic. We went through wonderful experiences together. You had been shocked by different doors. Those doors were there to be knocked by you.

Radio station Alfa FM opened their door to you so a lot of Uruguayans could know about your ideas—strong ideas that can lead people to their best. During a Breakfast Seminar you shared how to dare to dream and be whole. It was just a breakfast, but people asked for the lunch and the dinner too. We worked during those three days with a smaller group on how to make THE difference in our lives. We certainly learned a lot.

Uruguay training

Uruguay's inaugural self-esteem training

I attended the workshop with my twelve-year-old daughter and had a great experience. Learning that I am a powerful person able to accomplish whatever I want really made THE difference to my life. I realized how much negative talk I gave myself instead of focusing on the very best of me.

Can you imagine this powerful idea in the hands of a teenager? The first thing she did was share this good news with her classmates, and started being more sensitive to her environment. She spread the idea with passion, and at the same time she wondered why should grown ups have negative attitudes. Great start to a life that is going to blossom in the next century.

Yes, the new millennium is just about here and we want more support on these topics—your visit was just the beginning of something important and needed in our country. A positive attitude towards ourselves is the first step. Next century will find Uruguay stepping to Make THE Difference in South America. Thank you Betsy !!!

When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it.

Attitude

By Charles Swindoll

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than the facts.

It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home.

The remarkable thing is, we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past; we cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitudes."
